Each Sunday, our goal is to share a piece of gold with you. Some small piece of information that helps you to have a better week and achieve a better outcome.
Too many people operate in their business without a full appreciation for outlining the business strategy of where they want to go, how quickly they want to get there, and what they want the value of the business to be when they get there.
For many businesses, outlining that strategy means getting partners and owners together and having some really challenging conversations. One of the biggest reasons that partners break up is that they are missing this alignment around these areas.
These conversations should be done in a “safe zone.”
It is often helpful to have a coach or consultant help with these conversations. Even if trust is high and respect is strong, having a facilitator really makes a difference in getting to a clear result where people are committed to the next steps.
This is especially true when you are dealing with family dynamics within a business. With family, emotions run high, and candor is easy, but sometimes too much. Having a good facilitator makes the difference between getting it right for everyone and someone simply acquiescing because that means less friction—which ultimately leads to frustration, or even worse, resentment.
After you have clarity of where you want to go with your business and what success looks like for each stakeholder, then you can begin to develop the sales or growth strategy to achieve the results. By having clarity, the sales and marketing objectives will feed into the operational requirements to support the growth and ensure success.
As you go on this journey, I recommend two critical pieces.
- Account for the Best –Case Scenario, Worst– Case Scenario, and Most Likely Scenario. One of my mentors shared that with me years ago, and it has been very helpful.
- Align the goals from the ownership down to your full team to ensure buy-in. When you share the vision and goals of the future with the people who are going to contribute to getting you there, there must be a WIIFM (“what’s in it for me”). If they are going to get behind the vision, it must serve you, serve them, and serve the customer.
These alignment from the owner(s) through to the team and to the customer becomes the magic that accelerates a business.
