Each Sunday our goal is to share a piece of gold with you. Some small piece of information that helps you to have a better week and achieve a better outcome.

As we kick off the new year, one of the most important things that we do is set new objectives for our organizations…and for our lives. Many companies have an amazing routine for strategic planning that involves days, weeks, or even months of planning. On the personal side, however, we often only spend a few minutes focused on New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I would challenge you to put some real energy and focus on YOU as we go into the new year. Spend some time thinking about what has gone well over the past year and what hasn’t that you’ve learned from. Then spend some time planning what you want for YOU in 2023. I know of people who go so far as to put a personal board in place to help and challenge them to push and think differently in the unique areas of their life. Garrett J. White teaches a structure of Body, Being, Balance, and Business, which is an approach that I love.

If you want to level up further, find a mentor who can help you to achieve those outcomes. The reality is that everyone needs a coach; someone who isn’t afraid to be a truth teller, to call you out, to push you to be your best, and help you to achieve the mission(s) of your life. I’ve been fortunate to learn from some incredible people over the years and can tell you that I have leveled up in every area of my life because of it.

Next, seek to become a mentor yourself. Invest in someone (or a few people) who you care about and want to help achieve new levels of success. Mentoring others has been incredibly valuable for me because I find that I learn as much as I share. By being a coach/mentor, it helps me to be accountable to the behaviors I teach, learn how others think about different situations, and gain new skills in tackling problems. Not to mention that it is extremely rewarding to see someone succeed and know you had a small part in helping.

It is hard to find the time to focus on mentorship. However, an investment of 90 to 120 minutes per week will make the remaining hours of the week much more successful.

Investing in yourself is genuinely the best investment you can make. It will help you to be a better leader, spouse, parent, partner, professional, or simply have a better attitude for those around you.

Investing in others pays it forward and gives you the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone’s life. Plus, I can assure you that it will come full circle. Good investments always have a return.
